Practice Policies

  • Contact

Phone calls are by appointment only. We are most responsive via email. We do our best to return your email inquiries and messages through the portal within 24-48 business hours.

  • Privacy

We respect your privacy. That is why we use HIPAA/HITECH compliant software for virtual appointments and medical record maintenance. We also maintain confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship outside of session by de-identifying your information if we engage in consultation, supervision, and/or research.

  • Finances and Insurance

Payment is due at the time of session. For self-pay and out-of-network insurance clients, this will be the full session fee. For in-network insurance clients you are responsible for either the copay, coinsurance, or the deductible amount at the time of session, which may vary depending on your plan. We do our best to help you navigate the overwhelming world of insurance, but ultimately you are responsible to provide us with up-to-date insurance information, to tell us if you are covered by more than one insurance, and to know what benefits your insurance plan covers. You are responsible for paying for services not covered by your insurance.

    We currently accept:
+Sentara Health Plans (commercial and medicaid)
    +TRICARE (certified Out-Of-Network)

  • Good Faith Estimate

The No Surprises Act was created in order to increase transparency about costs for healthcare services and protect uninsured or self-pay clients from surprise medical bills in the mail. If you are self-paying for services, you will receive a Good Faith Estimate at the beginning of treatment which includes anticipatory costs for services. For example, weekly 60-minute therapy appointments at $200/hr for 52 weeks of treatment is estimated to be $10,400. If you receive a bill that is $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute the bill. For more information on the Good Faith Estimate view the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

  • Cancellation

We respect your time, and we specifically have a time reserved for you. However, life does happen. If for any reason you need to cancel an appointment, please do so 24 business hours in advance, as this will give us enough time to fill that time slot with someone else. Otherwise you will be subject to a missed appointment fee.

  • Artwork

All artwork created in session is viewed as a form of protected health information (PHI) and therefore is treated with the same respect as other forms of PHI (see HIPAA).

  • Social Media

The practice currently has a social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. However, individual therapists will not accept friend requests or follow clients on social media as this is viewed as a breach of confidentiality in the therapeutic relationship. See what we are up to on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn!

Understanding Art Therapy

Art therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy that harnesses the power of creative processes, such as drawing, painting, and sculpting, to foster emotional growth, self-awareness, and healing. As a mental health profession, art therapy integrates the creative process with psychological theories and techniques to support individuals, groups, and families in navigating various mental health challenges. The premise of art therapy is that engaging in the creative process can enhance self-expression, improve communication, and facilitate problem-solving, ultimately leading to better mental health and overall well-being.

What to Expect from an Art Therapy session

An art therapy session typically begins with an initial consultation where the art therapist and the individual discuss goals, concerns, and expectations. Following this, the art therapist guides the individual through a creative process, which may involve activities like drawing, painting, or sculpting, to help them express and explore their emotions. Throughout the session, the art therapist may employ various techniques, such as art-making, journaling, or mindfulness exercises, to support the therapeutic journey. Sessions can vary in length, lasting from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the individual’s needs and the art therapist’s approach.

Insurance and Fees

Art therapy services may be covered by insurance, depending on the specifics of the individual’s policy and the credentials of the art therapist. It is crucial to check with your insurance provider to understand the extent of your coverage. Fees for art therapy services can vary based on the art therapist’s experience, location, and the services offered. Some art therapists may provide sliding scale fees or package deals, so it is advisable to inquire about their pricing structure to find an option that suits your financial situation.
