Review of Therapy Private Practice by Jackie Schuld LPC, ATR-BC, REAT
I recently read Therapy Private Practice: Creating a private practice that enriches your life as a person and therapist by fellow art therapist Jackie Schuld LPC, ATR-BC, REAT and found the contents insightful, inspiring, but most importantly, validating!
Jackie has been in private practice since 2020. Her book is written chronologically in mini-essay format, and each essay is an easy read and easily digestible. This kind of formatting was refreshing for my eyes and I found it kept me engaged for longer periods of time.
Her mini-essays radiate vulnerability and authenticity as she discusses her process of learning what worked for her and what changes she needed to make so that she could practice sustainably and do the things she is most passionate about, such as writing and working with late-identified autistics.
Jackie’s vulnerability, such as discussing her relationship with money, makes her an excellent role model for an art therapist wanting to go into private or group practice. She writes about her fears, some of which I too have felt and experienced— seeing those fears written down on paper made me feel seen and validated some of my practice management decisions.
Her book inspires and challenges me to keep creating the professional life I envision for myself. I think this is a necessary read for any therapist, especially an art therapist, wanting to go into private practice.
